A Day with the Maidstone Raiders Disability Football Team
A group of our colleagues had the privilege of spending the day volunteering with the Maidstone Raiders Disability Football Team. This was part of our company’s volunteering leave program, and it turned out to be an incredibly rewarding and eye-opening experience.
We kicked off the day by delivering some much-needed football gear to the team. Altogether, we brought 43 footballs, football boots, and shin pads, with even more items to be delivered at a later date. The team was thrilled with the equipment, which will make a real difference to their players.
The Maidstone Raiders Disability Football Team is part of the Stones in the Community initiative, a charity that works alongside Maidstone United but operates entirely independently. The program is self-funded and run entirely by volunteers, offering people of all ages and abilities the chance to play football. Their work ensures that everyone, regardless of their disability, can experience the joy and camaraderie that comes from being part of a team.
One of the main tasks our team helped with on the day was auditing the team’s football kits and equipment. This involved checking their inventory to ensure they have everything they need to support their players. Normally, this task is carried out by Lorraine Humm, the dedicated organiser who manages the Raiders, and it was humbling to be able to lend a hand with something that’s so crucial to the team’s operations.

The experience left us all with a deep respect for the incredible work the charity does. It’s easy to take for granted the opportunities we have to engage in sports and other activities, but seeing how much effort goes into making these opportunities available to people with disabilities was inspiring. The dedication of Lorraine and her team of volunteers is truly remarkable, and it was an honour to support them in their mission.
As a company, we’re reminded of the importance of giving back to our communities and supporting initiatives that make a real difference in people’s lives. It’s not just about volunteering time; it’s about standing alongside organisations like the Raiders, helping them to continue their vital work.
We’re looking forward to seeing the team grow and thrive with the new equipment, and we’re excited to stay connected with the program in the future. To anyone considering volunteering, we can’t recommend it enough – you’ll not only make an impact, but you’ll also come away with a greater appreciation for the incredible people working to make the world a better place.
